SUNLIGHT TO ELECTRIC

Pole mounted solar panels

Solar panels also can be pole-mounted, even for residential uses, as above.

In 1905, Albert Einstein published a paper about the Photoelectric Effect, a phenomenon which describes how incident light falling upon certain metallic surfaces will liberate electrons from their parent atoms and begin to flow through the material.

This flow of electrons is in fact the reason why electricity happens. By utilizing this principle it becomes possible to create solar cells that will provide an electric current.

We use the word PV or photovoltaic to describe the Photoelectric Effect.

THE PERFECT SOLAR SITE

Orientation to the sun is ultimately the most critical site specification. A southern exposure provides the most solar gain.

Find south by using a compass. Or locate the north star at night (make a 180 degree turn to face south).

Shading is the next most important site characteristic. Shading from trees, dormers, houses, vents, chimneys can significantly reduce the performance of a system.

LIFE SPAN OF A SOLAR SYSTEM

PV modules are guaranteed to perform for 20 years. The PV systems have no moving parts. Therefore they are inherently very low-maintenance.
